Introduced in 1983, the Olympus OM-3 camera is an upgraded version of the OM-1 and OM-2 models. This compact 35mm SLR camera, despite its small size, boasts a large, clear viewfinder, making it a joy to use for photography enthusiasts. The OM-3 maintained the hallmark control layout of its predecessors, placing shutter speed, aperture, and focus all under the command of one hand at and around the lens mount, providing a unique and convenient user experience.
Its most significant advancement was the inclusion of a highly sophisticated metering system. Not only does it offer standard center-weighted metering, but it also features a spot, multi-spot, and highlight and shadow control modes. The camera's top shutter speed was increased to 1/2000, and a hot shoe was integrated into the design, a feature found on almost every other SLR camera of its time.
The OM-3 also offers the flexibility of interchangeable focusing screens, back doors for adding a Data Back, and motor drives for rapid firing. However, it is worth noting that this camera is entirely manual, eschewing any auto exposure capabilities. The OM-3 was discontinued in 1986, making it one of the rarer models in the OM series due to its short production run and high market price.
